Otter Relaxation in Homer Harbor (spa day & self facials for this otter)

A sea otter is floating peacefully in Homer Harbor, located at the tip of the Kenai Peninsula. The harbor is a frequent hangout for these marine mammals, as it provides a sheltered environment away from the rougher waters of Kachemak Bay. However, rafts and rafts of them are all over Kachemak Bay. This otter is seen engaging in extensive grooming, which includes rubbing its face and paws to clean its fur.

Grooming is a critical survival behavior for sea otters. Unlike other marine mammals that rely on a thick layer of blubber for warmth, otters depend on their incredibly dense fur to trap a layer of air against their skin for insulation. This requires constant maintenance to keep the fur clean and waterproof. In this clip, the otter displays a high level of comfort around the harbor's docks and vessels, showcasing how these animals have adapted to human activity in one of Alaska’s busiest fishing ports. The calm, green waters of the harbor provide a perfect backdrop for observing these charismatic creatures in their natural habitat.
