Spring is on the Calendar: Coming Soon!

Jill and I (& Hunter) took a walk down to the beach to see how the ice is holding up as we get closer to spring. Even with the sun shining, the Cook Inlet is still packed with these massive, jagged ice blocks that the tides have stacked up against the bluffs. It’s a rugged landscape this time of year, where the white of the ice meets the deep blue (brown... lol) of the open water. (It was -20F this morning, but warmed up to 20F for our walk).

Across the inlet, the mountains are as clear as ever, but there’s no mistaking that winter isn't ready to let go just yet. Walking over these frozen plates gives you a real sense of the power of the tides here in Southcentral Alaska. It’s a transition period—everything is waiting for that final thaw. For now, I’m just enjoying the crisp air and the way the light hits the frozen coast, even if spring feels like it’s taking its sweet time to actually arrive.

Mount Spurr, Mount Redoubt, and the rest of the Cigmit Mountains are in the background.
